Schaltbau Group to supply charging infrastructure for Kiel’s e-bus fleet from mid-2020

Munich, 10 October 2019 – In line with the City of Kiel’s strategy to deliver cleaner air, reduce noise levels and improve climate protection, from mid-2020, KVG Kieler Verkehrsgesellschaft mbH will introduce a total of 36 all-electric articulated buses. Via its subsidiary SBRS, Schaltbau Holding AG [ISIN: DE000A2NBTL2] will be supplying the infrastructure needed to charge these innovative vehicles.

Following a Europe-wide call for tenders with a preliminary competition in spring 2019, Kieler Verkehrsgesellschaft decided in favour of its industrial partners to successively convert its fleet to eco-friendly all-electric articulated buses. This rigorous step positions the north German federal state capital as a pioneer in the field of sustainable, climate-friendly mobility in local public transport in Germany.

In this environment, the Schaltbau subsidiary Schaltbau Refurbishment Systems (SBRS) successfully asserted itself against its competitors in the selection process by impressively demonstrating the most economical concept. Apart from the initial investment for the acquisition, the recurring maintenance work provided by a single source were also taken into account.

The order from the City of Kiel comprises charging infrastructure for a total of 36 all-electric articulated buses and the installation of 14 charging points, including the required adjacent buildings. “With this order, we are again enhancing the Schaltbau Group’s profile as a highly proficient systems supplier in key future markets such as e-mobility,” commented CEO Dr Albrecht Köhler. “We are leveraging the entire range of skill and innovative strength gained in 90 years of corporate history.”

SBRS e-mobility solutions are a result of the Schaltbau Group’s expertise in the field of energy systems combined with its ability to develop customised applications. The high-performance fast-charging stations designed by SBRS are suitable for both public transport scenarios and new mobility applications such as industrial shuttle services. The increasingly strict regulations introduced to protect the climate and improve the quality of air in our cities and municipalities are driving a growing demand for the Schaltbau Group’s e-mobility solutions.

“We are already looking forward to another record year in the history of our young company,” added Thomas Milewski, Managing Director at SBRS. “After successfully commissioning new equipment in Brussels and Osnabrück and gaining new orders for large-scale projects from the cities of Münster, Düsseldorf, Monterrey and Venice, we have also broadened our regional customer base in the course of the year.”

The programme initiated by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) to promote the purchase of electric buses for local public transport services is providing 40 per cent of the investment costs for the procurement of charging infrastructure in the federal state capital of Kiel.
