RBUEP DK level crossing system – Banedanmark

  • Project duration: 2013 – 2023
  • Country of deployment: Denmark
  • Business unit: Signalling (Level Crossing)

In 2009, the Danish Parliament made a fundamental decision in favour of the nationwide introduction of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) on the entire public rail network (“Signalling Programme”). In addition to the complete interlocking and communication technology, the level crossing protection technology is also affected. In total, these are c. 600 level crossings between railway tracks and roads or pedestrian crossings.

In detail, three different products are concerned, delivered to Denmark by PINTSCH BAMAG GmbH. These include passenger warning systems (PWS) for use in the platform area, staff crossing systems for trained staff in the area of vehicle depots as well as marshalling yards and level crossing protection systems for level crossings between public roads and railway lines. The latter still split in installations which are exclusively intended for use in the ERTMS and systems which can be used both in the existing signalling system (legacy system) and in the new ERTMS. Migration of a legacy level crossing to ERTMS takes less than 2 hours. For both applications, the systems are completely pre-tested at the factory. The passenger warning systems and level crossing protection systems are based on the proven RBUEP technology, which has been further developed for this project to RBUEP DK and is also certified according to CENELEC SIL 4. The LED-ZA module, which is known from the auxiliary indicator in the German and other European markets, is used as the controller unit for the staff crossing system. The LED-ZA control unit is also certified according to CENELEC SIL 4.

After extensive testing and trial phases, the first systems went into operation between August and October 2018.
